The unpredictable consequences of traumatic brain injuries

Victims of traumatic brain injuries suffer a whole lot more than physical damage. Because TBI is not a visible injury that needs a cast or crutches, other people struggle to understand the many ways in which it affects a person. Nevertheless, TBI is a common injury suffered in automobile accidents -- although it not always diagnosed immediately.

If you have suffered a brain injury -- regardless of the severity -- the patience of your loved ones may be tested. TBI can cause emotional fluctuations that may cause you to act out of character in a variety of ways. Here are some of the changes with which they may have to cope:

  • Depression -- Depending on the severity of your injuries, you might have also lost physical abilities, and along with the damage done to your brain, you may feel helpless because you are suddenly unable to partake in activities that you once adored. Although cognitive behaviour therapy may help, depression typically sets in when that treatment ends.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder -- Traumatic events of any kind can cause PTSD. The accident that caused your TBI may leave you feeling helpless with fear and horror as you repeatedly relive the dreadfulness of it. Victims find it almost impossible to let go of those overwhelming memories.
  • Personality changes -- Loved ones often struggle to understand the many personality changes a TBI victim can undergo. If the frontal lobe of your brain was damaged, you would likely be unable to control yourself, and making sensible decisions or reasoning properly may be a struggle. Uncontrollable mood swings may create an emotional rollercoaster that could test both you and your loved ones.
  • Aggression and anxiety -- Coping with all these changes of which you have no control can cause panic that may lead to anxiety -- and some bouts of aggression. There may be memory loss among the many changes that make you feel worthless and helpless, leaving you frustrated without knowing how to release the feelings of anger.
  • Wait and see – Every TBI case is unique, and you may experience some or all of these emotional problems. With appropriate therapy and care, you may eventually heal and return to live a normal life as you knew it before the accident -- but it is often a case of wait and see. Nothing about traumatic brain injuries is predictable.
  • You need legal support -- While you have to cope with the emotional and physical harm after being the victim in an unfortunate incident, such as a car accident, you will also have to face the financial consequences. Medical treatment, therapy, medication and other bills will accumulate while you are unable to return to work -- exacerbating the hopelessness of your situation. This is the time when you need the support and guidance of an experienced personal injury lawyer to fight for your rights, including the recovery of damages.

A lawyer who understands all the consequences of TBI and who can put a value to the emotional and other trauma the negligence of another party caused can be a valuable asset. Along with obvious financial losses, you need a lawyer who can fight for you to be compensated for past and future physical and emotional suffering.
